Feeling isolated, depressed, anxious, or just want a non-judgmental person to speak with about the peaks and valleys of life? You're not alone! Therapy utilization is at an all time high in the United States. Just by looking for a therapist, you have done something brave and started your journey to healing. Many of my clients are individuals or couples who are frustrated with patterns that are no longer working for them and are looking for a guide to hold them accountable in reaching their goals. I am a sex and relationships therapist with a background in systemically-focused treatment. This means that I am not afraid to explore topics that many other therapists may shy away from like gender, spirituality, and politics. I also use mindfulness and creative arts therapy techniques to help clients express and understand their emotions. Life can be overwhelming and stressful, but you don't have to deal with it alone. Make the choice to put your wellness first.
As a therapist, I strive to provide my patients with a balance of validation and challenge. When we feel stuck, it can seem impossible to take action and make change. Together, we can explore your strengths and how those can guide you through your fears and anxieties. I utilize a strength-based, trauma-focused approach that is designed to treat you as an individual, with all the unique experiences and perspectives you bring to the therapy setting.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with 15 years of experience helping people develop insight, knowledge and self-compassion. I specialize in treating anxiety, trauma, substance use, relationship conflict and grief. I am a national consultant for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders, certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD, Dual Recovery and skilled in therapies for those with abuse histories (e.g., STAIR, Seeking Safety). My doctoral training in cognitive neuroscience laid the foundation for my understanding of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. With this understanding we can find tools to reduce suffering and increase meaning in your life. Above all else, I value the human relationship. I believe my most important skill is helping people feel comfortable and build trust in the therapeutic alliance. Please reach out so you can tell me about yourself and your needs.
Welcome to the Awareness and Wellness Center (AWC)! My name is Amy Mintgomery and I am a professional counselor in Pennsylvania providing in-person and online counseling. I have been providing therapy services for adults struggling with a range of issues including substance use disorders, problems with self-esteem, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief/loss, as well as anger/stress management problems and more. I have gained this experience working in a variety of therapeutic settings including long-term residential, inpatient and outpatient agencies. For 18 years I worked in the Student Life division of a local university. I worked primarily with student organizations in organizational development. I helped the young adult population of the university develop self-efficacy and to better manage stress. More recently I worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings for substance use and co-occurring disorders. In therapy, I use a person-centered approached utilizing cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused technique. My approach is to provide a soothing space and offer the environment you need to talk through life’s challenges. “Life on life’s terms” can be complicated and everyone needs a place to process difficulties. My hope is to be part of your “We” so that you have the professional support needed to begin to work through challenges and find solutions to better manage stress and the emotions connected to that stress.
People seek therapy when they are in pain. This pain may show up as anxiety, depression, loneliness, compulsive behaviors, addiction or a combination of these. My job as your therapist is to meet you where you are and to understand your experience, your pain, and to help you move forward. The goal is to create a collaboration in which you have the support and safety to begin to challenge thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that may be holding you back and causing suffering. I will guide you in this work with warmth, humor, respect, and acceptance. I work with a variety of modalities, including psychodynamic, person-centered therapy and more symptom-focused modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. However, as with all therapies, it is the relationship we create that is most vital. I have limited evening and Sunday availability, but I primarily see clients during the day on weekdays. In your initial visit we will talk about your goals and challenges and you can get a sense of how I work. I look forward to meeting you.

I encourage you to take a chance and reach out to see if we might be a good fit.
